Judging on the flying, bloodsucking critters hovering around the Coast these days, it appears we are in the midst of a bad mosquito season.

Could it be attributed to the mild winter weather we had? Maybe, still several area bug experts say there is more to it than just temperature.

Dr Jerome Goddard, entomologist (that means he's a bug expert) with the Mississippi Department of Health, said, "Some of the worst mosquito vexed questions in the country are in Alaska," where mosquitoes are for a like reason big they could carry passengers and the winters are notoriously inhospitable.

Goddard was common of three experts who addressed our question of severity, the others being Ray Cuevas, director of mosquito superintend for Harrison County, and Wayne Machado, a director at Mosquito superintend Inc., a Louisiana firm contracted to direct mosquitoes in Hancock and Jackson counties.
